Farmers Market Fall Fiesta Brings Artists, Chefs and Original Vendors Together to Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Santa Fe Farmers Market Dear Friend of the Farmers Market, The Santa Fe Farmers' Market Institute is hosting the Farmers Market Fall Fiesta at Bishop's Lodge on Saturday, October 6 at 6 pm to celebrate the Santa Fe Farmers Market's 40th anniversary. Harvest food from local growers will be prepared using recipes from many of Santa Fe's most celebrated chefs. Students from the culinary arts department of the College of Santa Fe will work alongside the chefs, and participate in everything from preparation to presentation. Nine renowned artists have donated pieces for the live auction, each created especially for this event. Two special dinners prepared by culinary stars will also be auctioned. The silent auction will feature items related to the Market. And, some of the Market's original vendors will be honored, as well as two key organizations that supported the creation of the Santa Fe Farmers Market in the late 1960s. It was back in the late 1960s that several vendors decided to start a farmers' market in Santa Fe. They had been selling in Los Alamos and to their neighbors and friends in surrounding communities. They wanted to start a Market in Santa Fe to see if they could meet new customers and not have to sell door to door. The League of Women Voters got involved a short time later, to offer their assistance in structuring the Market, setting up a board of directors and creating rules and regulations. The County Extension Office also helped to recruit other farmers and offer assistance. While some of the original vendors have died, as well as some of the original League of Women Voter volunteers, the spouses and children of the original participants are still selling at the Market, and they, along with representatives from the two supportive organizations, will be honored at the Farmers Market Fall Fiesta. "What's amazing about this celebration is to see how the Market has grown so precipitously over the last four decades. First there were five or six vendors, making a few bucks while selling out of the back of their trucks at St. Anne's Church. Now, the Market is one of the top ten in the nation, and there are more than 150 agricultural producers who sell to 160,000 customers a year generating more than $2 million in sales. We're now in the midst of building a $4.5 million permanent facility to house the Market for the next 80 years. It's an amazing success story," said Sarah Noss, Executive Director of the Santa Fe Farmers' Market Institute. To celebrate the 40-year success of the Santa Fe Farmers Market, nine internationally known artists have created pieces for the live auction that reflect in some way the essence of the Market, either through the natural materials in which the pieces are made or through the subject matter. Each artist created an original piece, and gallery owner Linda Durham will be the auctioneer. Participating artists include Tom Joyce, Judy Tuwaletstiwa, Candyce Garrett, Forrest Moses, Carol Anthony, Elias Rivera, Pat Oliphant, Arthur Lopez and Jim Vogel. Some famous chefs have also stepped forward to celebrate the Market's anniversary. Kim Muller, executive chef at the Galisteo Inn's La Mancha Restaurant, and Deborah Madison, three-time winner of the James Beard Awards, author and founding chef of the Greens Restaurant in San Francisco, have teamed together to auction a dinner for six at Madison's home in Galisteo. The Santa Fe School of Cooking is also celebrating by auctioning a cooking class and dinner for 20, taught and prepared by Rocky Durham, former chef de cuisine at SantaCafe, internationally syndicated food columnist and instructor at the Santa Fe School of Cooking. It promises to be a great event, with delicious food, regional folk and dance music by the Love Buzzards, and fantastic art. Tickets are $125 each ($65 tax deductible). Call us at 983-7726 to reserve your tickets today! Cash, checks, MC, Visa and AMEX accepted. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Institute’s operating expenses as we conclude our capital campaign over the next year. We hope to see you there!
