NM Senate Joint Memorial to Begin Process of Prohibiting Production of New Nuclear Weapons in New Mexico

A beautiful collaboration amongst anti-nuclear activists followed the overwhelmingly anti-nuclear hearings on Los Alamos’ proposed new Bombplex 2030 facility. Out of it has emerged a remarkable new piece of legislation. Citing the nuclear non-proliferation treaty as its basis, and invoking Article 6 of the Constitution which makes treaties the highest law of the land, Senate Joint Memorial 47 expresses the resolve of the New Mexico Legislature that the “Manufacture of Nuclear Weapons in New Mexico should be prohibited.” We couldn’t agree more. Veteran activist, filmmaker and poet Shannyn Sollitt is spearheading the initiative in collaboration with Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety. This Sun News was honored to be in such company when participating in the early stages of drafting the memorial. The memorial also posits an alternative mission for the labs, recommending that the labs focus on, “investing in the development of renewable energy technologies and other endeavors that promote sustainability and affirm life for the generation who will be bearing children in the year 2030 in New Mexico and the world. To lend your support, call Shannyn Sollitt at 989-4482 and to thank the sponsor call Senator Shannon Robinson at 986-4856.
