Congressman Udall Rallies Santa Fe Farmer’s Market Film and Fundraiser
by Leland Lehrman

Congressman Tom Udall helped boost turnout to the recent Santa Fe Farmer’s Market fundraiser at the Santa Fe Film Center. Joining citizens to see the important new documentary “The End of Suburbia, Oil Depletion and the Collapse of The American Dream,” the Congressman explained his role in the Peak Oil Caucus in Congress and discussed the importance of local production within the larger strategy of reducing energy usage. He also emphasized that local growers are often organic growers, once again reducing the usage of toxic petroleum-based fertilizer and pesticides.

The film went on to discuss the implications of peak oil, the inevitable supply crunch as developing and modern nations compete for the remaining energy resources of the planet. The supply of both natural gas and oil is uncertain even now, and within the next ten years its disappearance will lead to massive dislocations and structural change in the American way of life. Leading “new urbanists,” petroleum engineers, and social commentators provided a frank and stark picture of the requirements facing world citizens and particularly Americans who rely on cheap energy for their basic way of life.

Although long on problems and short on solutions, the film was a truthful wake-up call and is highly recommended. One of the solutions that the film did mention was the recreation of light rail systems linking walkable communities with larger urban workforce centers. It was shocking to watch as GM, Firestone, and Standard Oil conspired against the light rail systems, buying them up and ripping them out in order to create a market for their gas guzzlers. Here in New Mexico, Governor Richardson has begun the process of reinvigorating the rail system. Now we need to see spur lines and light rail service for smaller communities. We need to be ready before gas hits six dollars a gallon.
